2 week agoI always order the haddock and fries when I go there. Very good price. Highly recommend this place. You can eat at one of their picnic tables on the beach.

3 week agoThe girl taking the order was not patient. It was not busy at the time of our order yet our group felt rushed. For this reason only 1 member of our group ended up ordering from here as we did not feel welcome. Overall, the fish & chips were pretty tender. Slightly overpriced but came out in a timely manner. It’s next to the beach and they have plenty of covered areas to stand & enjoy your meal.

2 month agoIt was a day we wanted try a couple of places for fish and chips. First place was Knechtel’s. As we waited for them to open we decided to order the 4 piece fish (Lake Erie perch) that came with coleslaw & fries. We sat down on one of their outdoor picnic tables to sample their fish dinner. The batter was nice and light - the perch was deliciously moist and tasty. Top marks!!! The chips were good but not exceptional. But the fish makes the drive to Port Dover worth it. We will be back to try the pickerel. We scratched out the next place we were going to try since their menu tells us that they feature Knechtel’s famous lightly battered Lake Erie perch. Now to the last fish & chips stop

2 month agoNot in Port Dover often but was in the area so grabbed take out to bring back to Hamilton. Ordered the Perch platter. It was prepared quickly and the girl who took my order was polite, friendly and helpful. Price seemed fair for take out. Few hours later after a quick reheat at high heat in the oven, found the perch held up amazingly. Perfectly crispy batter and the mildest tasting fish I maybe ever had. Very good. Only reason keeping this from 5 stars is the Tartar Sauce provided. Comes in foil service pack so its being made elsewhere, but Im glad I didnt pour it on my fish. It was awful. Maybe worst tartar sauce Ive ever had. I quickly made my own so all good in the end.

2 month agoWe visited Knechtel's on the beach to get the Port Dover specialty, Lake Erie perch and pickerel ( walleye) dinner. The fish was fantastic and what I would expect and it was a past busy season day so the place was empty. I think this is a seasonal place til Thanksgiving so check it out if you like fish and chips. The price was above average and the portion below average but the quality was there and scenery was great to take away the 20$ + price tag

2 month agoWent for a drive to Port Dover today inspired by the sunny weather. We stopped at Knechtel's and shared a perch dinner. For my wife and I this is a tradition that started over 40 years ago. Knechtel's was only open for takeout, its early in their season. The perch dinner was excellent, nicely battered and fried fillets, creamy coleslaw, fresh bun and butter, and tasty French fries, a classic. I recommend the lunch to fellow travelers, and the town for its lovely view of lake Erie, the pier, and the beach. Only rated service and atmosphere low because we did takeout.

3 month agoUpdate: went back today Aug 15, 2024. Perch tacos are still great! Great location on the beach in Port Dover, plenty of tables. We ordered a couple different items, poutine $7, chili fries $8.50, kids chicken strips $7 and pickerel tacos $17. Great value for money, tacos were great, big portion and tons of flavor! 2nd year in a row coming here on our vacation and will be back!
